So, you're planning your trip to visit us and wondering just what is all the buzz about our Inn? Well, here is a little summary in pictures of what you will see ....

This is our parlour, and the newer part of the house. This addition came into existence in 1801. This room also served as a hospital during the Civil War.

Going through the parlour you will enter the "Eisenhower Room" where, you guessed it! Mamie and Ike would often escape here, to one of their favorite spots in the area, to have a delicious meal.

From the Eisenhower Room you step down into the Main Dining Room which seats about 80 comfortably...

A prototype of a plaque made to be displayed on the Battlefield and one of the many artifacts you will enjoy seeing here.

This room is the oldest part of the house, built by Squire Miller in 1757. Boasting a gorgeous working fireplace , this room is still enjoyed for special occasions when guests want a more private and intimate setting. (It can seat up to 12.)

In this room, you will see the door which boasts an original lock from the days of Squire Miller. This is said to be the best lock in the entire house!

Our Tavern has a full bar and also the oldest liquor license in Gettysburg. This room is a wonderful setting to enjoy a nice meal with yet another huge working fireplace which is used through out the year.

Going upstairs, we have several well appointed rooms, each one very unique. This is the J.E.B. Stuart Room which the General occupied on the Confederate Retreat. This view is coming through the door

This is the Patrick Henry room, where Mr. Henry actually stayed. (He was the nephew of the lady of the house.)

A beautiful view of the popular clawfoot tub in the bathroom....There is a separate neo-angle shower unit, too.

This is the Grumble Jones Room, named after a Confederate General who fought in the Battle of Fairfield, behind our Inn. This battle occurred at the same time as the Battle of Gettysburg. This is a view from the door entering the room. There is a lovely, modern bath in this room with a jetted tub.

If you love history, this is the room to stay in. It is the 1757 suite, above the 1757 room shown previously. This is where the family spent their nights. It is also where Ghost Lab stayed and supposedly captured lots of activity via their cameras and microphones....

This is the mirror where they saw a "shadow person". Notice the spectacular stone chimney which rises up from the room beneath.

Moving to the third floor, this is the Three Colonels Room, named after three men who thought they were mortally wounded during the Battle of Fairfield. They retired to this room in 1863, thinking this is where they would see their final days.

The good news is they all survived their injuries. This is how the suite looks today...

Here is the lovely soaking tub, perfect for relaxing after a tour of the battlefield, perhaps?

(Our 6th and last room on our journey is The Major Starr guest room which was being occupied at the time this was written. Stay tuned for a picture just as soon as it is free. (But the Inn is constantly busy, so we're not sure when that will be!)

Valentine's Day At The Inn....

Perhaps Squire Miller presented his wife with an embellished adornment of Cupid or a bouquet of flowers, some hearts, a few love birds; closely resembling the forthcoming Valentines of the upcoming 19th Century. (Germans who were settling in the United States at this time introduced this particular form of greeting with its Baroque ornamental style ultimately spreading to other parts of the country, thus paving the way for our modern Valentines).

The Superbowl and The Civil War

How did those poor boys ever survive without one of America's favorite pastimes, the Super Bowl? Look out, Eli and Tom; a little digging uncovered that during the civil war, soldiers would often pass the time (especially during the winter months) reading, partaking in musical "jam" sessions, enjoying a game of cards,dominos,chess or the occasional game of baseball.

One might take a moment and ponder if there had been a Super Bowl back then, Robert E. Lee or George Meade asking for a pause in the battle while they checked the score on the game. Oh, how things have changed so drastically over the years.....While it is a great way for Americans today to kick back and relax and enjoy an event like this , let's take a minute to remember those who came before us and sacrificed so much so we can enjoy everything that is so great about this wonderful country we live in. Those men and women of yesteryear had much simpler pleasures and lifestyles.

January seems to symbolize the start of new things, fresh approaches and change. Each year we choose a project to complete; last year the Main Dining Room got a "makeover".

This year the Parlour was on the top of list for a new coat of paint, and preparations were made; the holiday decorations were packed away, the furniture was moved and the staff set to work on the transformation. The undertaking was completed in about a week, and finally, we were able to step back and appreciate all the hard work that had been done.

Someone made a comment about the red paint and how fantastic it looked. Together with the white and blue trim, it looked patriotic. "What color red is that?" someone asked.

The owner, Joan, replied "To Die For Red." She admits she hadn't even paid attention to the name until later on, when she had to order more when she was running low.

Everyone agreed that this seemed very fitting for the Parlour, as it had once served a role as a Civil War Hospital.

A Place of Honor

We receive many wonderful praises from our guests, mostly in the form of a nice note or a review on Trip Advisor. However, this past week, we couldn't believe the very special gift bestowed upon us by Stan P. from Virginia. He and his lovely wife previously stayed with us for a weekend in October and to our pleasure and surprise, made plans to return with his sons,daughters and their spouses, for a holiday celebration weekend in December.

Imagine our surprise when Stan presented us on his arrival with this fantastic painting of the Historic Fairfield Inn, complete with all the details that make her so special. We are truly honored by this very special portrait which must have taken hours of work.

We are eagerly discussing places of honor where we can proudly display this. We hope when you come to visit, you will enjoy admiring this beautiful piece as much as we do. Again, thank you Stan for sharing your talent with us. We appreciate it more than words can ever say.

The History of Epiphany

January 6 is known in the Christian calendar as Epiphany. It is sometimes called the “Twelfth Night” being the 12th Day of Christmas. It signifies the event of the Magi, or Wise Men visiting the baby Jesus. So, the 12 days of Christmas don’t end at Christmas, Advent does. Instead, the 12 days start with Christmas, and end with Epiphany, and these 12 days are also sometimes called Christmastide. Epiphany is a Greek word that means manifestation, appearance, or showing forth. Historically, Epiphany began in the eastern Church as the celebration of the nativity of Jesus Christ. As the celebration of Christmas spread eastward, Epiphany changed to its present meaning. January 5th is Paramony, the Eve of the Feast of Epiphany.

Thinking of Those Before Us

In a letter to his sister Anna Simpson, Tally Simpson wrote:

"December 25th, 1862

My dear sister,

This is Christmas Day. The sun shines feeble through a thin cloud, the air is mild and pleasant, a gentle breeze is making music through the leaves of the lofty pines that stand near our bivouac. All is quiet and still and that very stillness recalls some sad and painful thoughts. The day, one year ago, how many thousand families, gay and joyous, celebrating Merry Christmas, drinking health to absent members of their family and sending upon the wings of love and affection long, deep, and sincere wishes for their safe return to the loving ones at home, but today are clad in the deepest mourning in memory to some lost and loved member of their circle..."

"When will this war end? Will another Christmas roll around and find us all wintering in camp? Oh! That peace may soon be restored to our young but dearly beloved country and that we may all meet again in happiness."

When everyone takes time to celebrate this joyous season, let us remember all of those before us who sacrificed so much for the good of our country.

How the Winter Solstice Relates to the Civil War

For an observer in the northern hemisphere, the December solstice marks the day of the year with the least hours of daylight for those living north of the Tropic of Cancer. It's the longest night of the year. From this point forward, we can start looking forward to longer days, more sunlight and Spring is only three short months away! This year, December 21, 2011 is when most of us in the United States will observe the transformation.

An interesting fact you may or may not know is that the the primary elements of the American Civil War Memorial in Waterloo, New York are aligned in an axis along the meridian like a sundial and not only mark the different times of the day,but specific times of the year, like that of the Winter Solstice. Pietro del Fabro, the designer, poured incredible detail into this creation. The Star Stone lies at the north end of the axis, at the south end is the flag pole. In between, along the same axis, are the portal and the North South Cenotaph. When the shadow cast by a vertical object, such as the Memorial flag pole, is precisely over the meridian, it is local apparent noon. The red flagpole bears the 36-star flag of 1865. Nearby is a North-South cenotaph — a pillar of 36 stones, one from each state in the nation at the war’s close. Behind them is a limestone portal leading to a grove of cedars. The trees circle a white marble stone dotted with star-shaped indentations overlaid with 23-karat gold leaf. Townspeople and visitors have been adding individual notches since 2007, each one representing 1,000 of the war’s 620,000 fallen combatants.
Spaced out in rows to the left and right are 57 individually carved limestone shafts with brass plaques. They pay tribute to the unluckiest of Waterloo’s 350-plus soldiers — men aged 18 to 47 who died in battle or, more commonly, from disease. Another stone pillar memorializes women caught up in the conflict, from mothers and medics to disguised soldiers and spies.
On one wall of the central enclosure is an inscription from President Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address: “All dreaded it, all sought to avert it ... and the war came.”
“He was very clear about forgiving the southern side as the war was coming to a finish (so as) to bring the country back together,” said del Fabro. “And unfortunately, when he was shot, it went the other way.”
The Winter Solstice noon mark (unmarked) falls in the middle of the south face of the Star Stone of this memorial.

What Was Christmas Like During the Civil War?

It hasn't escaped the attention of many that the traditions associated with Christmas celebrations in the United States today began during the Civil War. Without a doubt, it was the loneliness and insecurities of war felt by citizens and soldiers alike that created a need for them to seek solace and security. They found it in part by re-establishing familiar European traditions. This created the illusion of love and peace at a time when very little of that existed in their daily lives.

Christmas had been celebrated in Europe with eating, drinking, and dancing. It was the Puritans who attempted to end this indulgent behavior, and did it successfully when they came to America. With their arrival, Christmas became a serious occasion, the purpose of which was to introspectively ponder sin and religious commitment.

It took almost 200 years for our country to move away from this Puritan view and enjoy the holidays once more. Louisiana was the first state to make Christmas a holiday in 1830, and many states soon followed. Congress did not make Christmas a federal holiday until 1870. The religious revival of the mid 19th century also added to the desire to unite, celebrate, and recognize Christmas.

Christmas cards, carols, special foods, holding winter dances, all date back to the late 1850s. Even before the Civil War, it was common to cut Christmas trees and take them into the home, although they were tabletop size, and usually were arranged with other greenery and mistletoe, all supposed to bring good luck to the household. Union soldiers' letters mention decorating their camp Christmas trees with salt-pork and hard tack.

It was the development of the modern Santa Claus that embedded Christmas into the American way of life. In 1861, Thomas Nast was a German immigrant working as a writer and artist at Harper's Weekly. When he was tasked with providing a drawing to accompany Clement Clark Moore's 1821 poem, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, he called upon his Bavarian childhood to create our modern image of Santa Claus. His cherubic (but thin by today's standards) Santa was depicted bringing gifts of Harper's to the soldiers, making Nast the first to combine imagery (Santa Claus) and commercialism (selling Harper's) into the American marketplace.

Santa brought children gifts, and gifts were always home made. Children were satisfied to receive just small hand-carved toys, cakes, oranges or apples. Many Southern diaries tell the story of Santa running the blockaded ports in Dixie to fill children's stockings with what little the parents could spare to make the day special for them. Even General Sherman's soldiers played Santa to impoverished Southern children by attaching tree-branch antlers to their horses and bringing food to the starving families in the war-ravaged Georgia countryside.

The most famous Christmas gift of the war was sent by telegram from William Tecumseh Sherman to Abraham Lincoln on December 22, 1864. "I beg to present you as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah, with 100 and 50 guns and plenty of ammunition, also about 25,000 bales of cotton." The gift, of course, wasn't the guns, the ammunition or the cotton, but the beginning of the end of the Civil War.

How to Spend Your Time Here....

Most of our guests have a set idea of what they will be doing while staying with us, however, there are those of us that while drawn back again and again to the area for it's charm and history, there may be a yearning to go off the beaten path.

Here are just a few suggestions besides the obvious-

Geocaching:

If you're like me, I had no idea about this until early last year. You can read more about how it works here. This can be an exciting activity to plan with a family. There are several sites located through out the Gettysburg Area and in Adams County, PA. Click here for a few to get you started. This is a great way to get more familiar with a particular location you visit.

Sach's Bridge:

Sachs Covered Bridge was built in 1852 by David S. Stoner. Part of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia began it's retreat to Virginia by crossing this bridge after the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. Sach's covered bridge extends 100 feet across Marsh Creek. In 1938, the Pennsylvania Highway Department determined that Sachs Bridge was the most historic covered bridge in the state. Sachs Bridge was closed to traffic in 1968 and listed in the National Register of historic places in 1980. Floodwaters swept it from its abutments on June 19, 1996. The County of Adams rehabilitated the Sach's bridge by supporting its trusses with steel beams and by raising its elevation three feet.

Evergreen Cemetary:

The Evergreen Cemetery is a private cemetery that was located on Cemetery Hill before the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. It was established in 1854 when a group of local residents headed by attorney David McConaughy bought land on Raffensperger's Hill south of Gettysburg along the Baltimore Pike for a community cemetery. The large brick gatehouse was constructed in the late 1850's. During the Battle of Gettysburg, the hill was a key position for the Union Army. As a consequence, the cemetery and its gatehouse suffered damage from incoming artillery shells, as well as from the thousands of men and horses who tramped through it during and after the fighting. The Soldiers' National Cemetery was established immediately west of it after the battle. Although today the Soldiers' National Cemetery is closed to new burials, the Evergreen Cemetery is still active and plots may be purchased.

The Shriver House Museum.....

As part of my responsibilities at this beautiful Inn, it is my job to keep up to date on what's going on here and around the area so I can offer our guests the best experience possible. I am proud to say our Inn has partnered with the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Organization to promote awareness of "the unparalleled American heritage in the region running from Gettysburg, PA., through Maryland and Harpers Ferry, W.VA., to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville, VA."
I often like to assume the role of a visitor when I can and partake in all the same exciting experiences our guests might take advantage of. Because of the nature of our business, there is little time to do this, but I did manage to go to a fantastic site earlier this week that I felt I just had to share. It is a worthwhile visit for people of all ages.
The Shriver House and Museum is a fantastic place where one can experience the civil war through a civilian's eyes. Docents dress up in period attire and conduct tours through the building which bring to life the fascinating and heartbreaking story of a young father's dreams for himself and his family. His home boasts a tavern in the basement and what was once a bowling alley. There is also a lovely period garden which graces the backyard.
In addition I learned this home is privately owned and was lovingly restored to it's former splendor in 1996. It is totally funded by donations from the tours. It is obvious to everyone who meets the staff that they have a great love for this property and the history behind it.

A visit well worth the trip if you can fit it into your plans.

That the site of the James Gettys Homestead is Race Horse Alley Parking Plaza in Gettysburg on Carlisle Street?

Located at this site, a log-and-weatherboard dwelling was home to Gettys in 1786 when he founded the 210-lot town of Gettysburg on a portion of his family’s 381-acre farm. The house survived almost another century before succumbing to fire in 1880. At the time of the battle, it was the home of Adam Doersom, a local blacksmith. James Gettys’ activities extended beyond being the town father. Before his death in 1815, he served as tavern owner, sheriff, town clerk, road builder, state legislator and a brigadier general of local militia. He married Mary Todd, a distant relative of Mary Todd Lincoln, the Civil War’s First Lady.

Yet Another Way to See Gettysburg....

The Waltons and their friend, Bill, from Iowa and Georgia respectively are making the trek along the180-mile route from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Jefferson's Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia called the Journey Through Hallowed Grounds . This may seem like a standard summer excursion to most of us by automobile or motorcycle. But, to see the countryside and local sights by bicycle? Well, that takes lots of discipline and endurance! (They did manage to fit in a Segway tour on Sunday afternoon.)

You have our admiration and respect for doing something that most of us will never accomplish in this lifetime. Don't forget to fill us in on your amazing travels after your stop in Fairfield, PA!

Their next destination? The Antietam Battlefield. Laura laughed when she asked about how long I thought it would take her and her gang to get there. "Maybe an hour and a half?" I guessed. She laughed and politely reminded me that would be by car.

I did a quick search on the internet and located a great site that shows suggested routes to take by bike that avoid busy, major highways. For all you cyclers out there, it's well worth the look.

Good Times on the Porch and Patio

Aaaaah, it doesn't get much better than this! It is a beautiful day here in Fairfield and it is perfect for outdoor dining here and taking in the local sights.

It's hard to believe that not long ago, there was fighting and devastation that once had a stronghold on this town. Well manicured lawns boasting flowers and trees now grace the very road where many Confederates passed through on their retreat. More than a few rested here at the Inn; tired, hungry or wounded.

Quite a humbling thought, and yet equally amazing that we can now occupy the very same place as those soldiers.

Safe Travels to Wayne and Marylou

All the way from Nutrioso, Arizona, this lovely couple came especially to see their grandaughter receive her Master's Degree from Mount St. Mary's College in beautiful Emmitsburg, Maryland. It was an honor to host these two; they recently retired from overseeing the operations of a large dude ranch back out west for 25 years. We eagerly jumped at the chance to make their stay with us the very best experience it could be. It was their turn to be spoiled for a time.

Yes, it's true Patrick Henry and Thaddeus Stevens are part of our history here, and, now we can add John and Beth R. to the distinguished list of guests who have graced our Inn over the years.

This lovely couple chose to stay with us while they attended the Ladies & Gentlemen of the 1860s Conference in Harrisburg which addressed a variety of topics about the men and women of the Civil War era, what they wore, and how they lived. An in depth conversation revealed that John is also a member of the North-South Skirmish Association which was formed in 1950 to commemorate the heroism of the men, of both sides, who fought in the American Civil War, 1861-1865. "The N-SSA promotes the shooting of Civil War firearms and artillery and encourages the preservation and display of Civil War materials. The N-SSA works to accomplish these goals by conducting skirmishes; competitive, live firing of these Civil War firearms and artillery."
More discussion with John's beautiful wife, Beth led to how she is very involved with civilian costume competition. After breakfast they were planning on visiting Needle and Thread. This is the perfect place to visit for fabric or notions for constructing authentic period civil war clothing pieces. Upon further research about the construction of civil war garments, I have incredible respect for the time and patience Beth must deal with in this endeavor. "Fabric for a dress was a sizeable investment for the Victorian era lady -- and getting the most out of a garment was frequently an important concern. Not only were garments remade and recycled, but they were sometimes designed to permit wear for different occasions or seasons. "Convertible" dresses could include additional pieces such as pelerines, fichus, or different sleeves to change the look or function of a dress."Transformation" dresses might feature different bodices to extend the use of a skirt." Today is Stonewall Jackson's Birthday-A Good Reason to Celebrate!

For those of you that are familiar with the Inn, you know that J.E.B. Stuart graced this stately home with his presence on more than one occasion. He and Jackson were quite close. There is quite an amusing story shared about the two men just before the Battle of Fredericksburg.

"When Lee decided to invade the North in the Maryland Campaign, Jackson took Harpers Ferry, then hastened to join the rest of the army at Sharpsburg, Maryland, where they fought McClellan in the Battle of Antietam. Antietam was primarily a defensive battle fought against superior odds, although McClellan failed to exploit his advantage. Jackson's men bore the brunt of the initial attacks on the northern end of the battlefield and, at the end of the day, successfully resisted a breakthrough on the southern end when Jackson's subordinate, Maj. Gen. A.P. Hill, arrived at the last minute from Harpers Ferry. The Confederate forces held their position, but the battle was extremely bloody for both sides, and Lee withdrew the Army of Northern Virginia back across the Potomac River, ending the invasion. Jackson was promoted to lieutenant general. On October 10 his command was redesignated the Second Corps.

Before the armies camped for winter, Jackson's Second Corps held off a strong Union assault against the right flank of the Confederate line at the Battle of Fredericksburg, in what became a decisive Confederate victory. Just before the battle, Jackson was delighted to receive a letter about the birth of his daughter, Julia Laura Jackson, on November 23. Also before the battle, Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart, Lee's dashing and well-dressed cavalry commander, presented to Jackson a fine general's frock that he had ordered from one of the best tailors in Richmond. Jackson's previous coat was threadbare and colorless from exposure to the elements, its buttons removed by admiring ladies. Jackson asked his staff to thank Stuart, saying that although the coat was too handsome for him, he would cherish it as a souvenir. His staff insisted that he wear it to dinner, which caused scores of soldiers to rush to see him in uncharacteristic garb. So embarrassed was Jackson with the attention that he did not wear the new uniform for months."

During the Civil War, snowball fights were a pastime of many children and also many soldiers. Snowball fights sometimes just occurred between members of the same company but occasionally one or more companies would fight each other. Soldier letters and memoirs tell us that snowball fights were sometimes just as dangerous as real battle, many men suffered from broken teeth and bones from snowballs filled with ice or stones.

Two back-to-back snowstorms in February of 1863 provided the ammunition for a friendly snowball battle amongst rival divisions of Confederate troops near Fredericksburg, Virginia. On February 19, eight inches of snow fell on the region. Two days later, nine inches of snow fell. On February 25, sunny skies and mild temperatures softened the deep snow cover, providing ideal conditions for making snowballs.

During this time, the Confederate Army was camped near Fredericksburg. Some of the Divisions of the army had been reorganized, which had created friendly rivalries between the Confederate brigades and regiments. This helped spark a huge snowball battle near Rappahannock Academy in which approximately 10,000 Confederate soldiers participated. One soldier who participated in the snowball battle described it as one of the most memorable combats of the war.”

The battle started on the morning of February 25, 1863, when General Hoke’s North Carolina soldiers marched towards Colonel Stiles’ camp of Georgians, with the intent of capturing the camp using only snowballs. The attacking force, composed of infantry, cavalry and skirmishers, moved in swiftly. Battle lines formed and the fight began with “severe pelting” of snowballs. Reinforcements arrived from all sides to assist the brigade under attack. Even the employees of the commissary joined the snowball battle. Soon, the attacking soldiers were pushed back.

Hoke’s beaten soldiers retreated back to their camp. Colonel Stiles then held a Council of War on how best to attack the retreating force. He decided to organize his men and march directly into their camp, with snowballs in hand. When Stile’s forces finally arrived in Hoke’s camp, they were quite surprised to find that their adversaries had rallied and filled their haversacks to the top with snowballs. This allowed Hoke’s soldiers to provide an endless barrage of snowballs “without the need to reload.” The attacking force was quickly overwhelmed and many of their soldiers were captured and “whitewashed” with snow. The snowball battle came to an end and both brigades settled back into their respective camps. The captured prisoners were quickly paroled and returned to their camp, to much heckling from fellow soldiers. It was noted that General Stonewall Jackson had witnessed the snowball battle. One soldier remarked that he had wished Jackson and staff had joined the fight so he could have thrown a snowball at “the old faded uniforms.”

The weather turned mild and rainy in the following days. Other snowball battles were documented during the Civil War – including a snowball fight at Dalton, Georgia – but The Snowball Battle of Rappahannock Academy was unique in size, strategy and ample snow cover. The depth of the snow cover on the day of the battle was documented in a soldier’s diary to be 12 inches.

As I sit here waiting for our guests to come down for breakfast, I look around me and can't help but think about all those who have been here before me. I am honored to say I am the innkeeper. Lately we have been receiving lots of national press due to the airing on the Discovery Channel's "Ghost Lab". While this has been wonderful for business, the true test of how well we are doing is always best taken straight from our number one,most important resource of all, our guests! We deeply value any feedback regarding our operation, from our top of the line service we constantly strive to give, to our beautifully appointed guest suites and rooms, as well as the wonderful cuisine we serve. We are always looking for ways to make all of our guest's experiences the most memorable and enjoyable that they can possibly be.

One of our most recent reviews comes from Michael, 14, who stayed with us in the 1757 suite with his dad on a father/son getaway. He writes (and very eloquently, we might add):

"We spent one night here in the 1757 suite and it was a very nice experience. Staying in the original room felt weird at times but it did not bother me. The food and service in this Inn was great. I liked sitting on the bed and listening to the Christmas music at night. I wish to come back to this Inn because it is historic and beautiful on the inside. If you are visiting this Inn for the ghosts, then stay in the original 1757 room alone at night and see how you feel. I felt like I constantly had to get up from bed and look around and I also felt tense. Also, look in the big mirror from in the doorway upon entering the room.

How Quickly The Time Flies!

Well, friends, I can't believe how quickly the time has passed and how quickly the end of the 2010 is approaching! It's been a wonderful whirlwind of experiences meeting and making friends both near and far.

In September, there was "Pippinfest" which celebrates the arrival of Fall and honors a very special heirloom apple aptly named the "Pippin." The caramel apple parfaits were a huge hit -Yum!

Then of course, who can resist a good scary ghost story, especially in October, and eloquently delivered by none other than the Discovery Channel's "Ghost Lab" brothers Brad and Barry Klinge? Chef Sal is still deciding what culinary creation to add to the menu in honor of Private John Riley who has become quite an overnight sensation. I bet he never imagined in his wildest dreams he would ever be a celebrity.

November swept in with some gorgeous fall weather and marked another "Remembrance Day" hallmarked with some of our very favorite guests, Jesse and Bob and their beautiful wives staying with us here at the Inn and taking part in the local festivities in Gettysburg.

Also, we were lucky enough to have a young lady named Kristin from Baltimore grace us with her lovely presence as well.....she was quite the seamstress and had sewn all her own dresses and was also a historian.

Our delectable Thanksgiving Day Dinner was a huge hit! All told, it was said we served close to 300 guests . We prepared over 20 gallons of butternut squash and apple bisque, 100 pounds of turkey, 500 oysters, 60 pounds of ham, 35 pounds of red skin mashed potatoes, and 30 homemade pies. It was one of our busiest holiday celebrations to date. John S., from Ocean Conservatory, Toms River, NJ sent us a wonderful note about his experience celebrating this very special day with us: "My family was visiting Gettysburg over Thanksgiving and we ate Thanksgiving Dinner at your Inn. I must say it was the most pleasurable expereince I have had. You wer great! Your Inn was fabulous and, your staff was beyond friendly! What a great dinner and time at such a beautiful place! You both and all your staff are to be complimented for giving up your day to make ours so very enjoyable! Thank you again and all the very best to you all!"

It's hard to believe the holidays are in full swing here -the Inn has been beautifully decorated by little elves named Joan, Sal, Alexandra and Olga. The tree is absolutely magnificent and at least twelve feet, if not more. Why don't you plan on taking some time in the next few weeks to come over for a visit? Today, this room bears the name of the "1757 Dining Room." Still boasting the original plank flooring, along with an original door and lock-(the owners say it's the best one in the house!) it offers the hallmark in superb dining experiences.

With a grander way of living in these modern times of ours, it is hard to believe a family of seven could have been raised in such close living quarters, but fortunately for our patrons, it is the perfect setting for those special occasions. Think romance, think quaint and cozy, and be surrounded completely by history and nostalgia.

Many a muse has been shared in this room over the years, but of course while comfortably enjoying a fabulous meal that even the Squire would have been proud of!

Getting Ready for Pippinfest!

Put it on your calendar! For those of you that aren't familiar, Pippinfest is an old-time country street festival celebrating the Pippin apple and featuring arts & crafts, apple products, live country music, antiques, vintage cars and great food! It takes place all along main street in Fairfield.

The Inn will be hosting a bluegrass band, participating in the community yard sale on Saturday and of course, we will be serving our famous turkey legs! Don't forget to stop by and say hello and while you're at it, have a cup of hot cider or an order of pumpkin fritters.

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground

Hello everyone! It's been a whirlwind week as usual and it seemed to slip by without some sort of update on the latest happenings going on here at the Inn-so sorry! So, here is a quick update: our Innkeeper just returned from a seminar at the David Wills House which covered lots of ground; 180 miles worth to be exact-and she did it in just one afternoon. In anticipation of the 150th anniversary celebration of the American Civil War, participants studied and familiarized themselves with "The Journey Through Hallowed Ground: which stretches from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania through Frederick County, Maryland and ends at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello near Charlottesville, Virginia. The main objective of all this, of course it to be able to offer, you, our guests, the most positive and memorable experience possible. It's a beautiful morning here in Fairfield, the sun is beginning to peak over the nearby freshly mowed hay fields as a symphony of birds and crickets serenade us into the new day.

We are expecting a full house this evening and always enjoying hearing about how everyone will spend their time in the area. Some are here to celebrate special events such as weddings, reunions and birthdays. Others are here to immerse themselves in the fascinating history at every turn. This past week, the Inn had the distinct pleasure of entertaining a travel writer on assignment from USA today. We are honored to share that Ray left us with some wonderful words of praise in our guestbook. "What a place! So many thanks. Good food, good people, good accommodations, fantastsic history."
Equally as charming a few weeks back, the Inn hosted a mother who needed to meet an important report deadline for her job. Knowing it would be impossible to focus with her 5 and 7 year old daughters close at hand, she made the decision to "rough it" with us (with her husband's blessing of course) where she could complete her work uninterrupted. (And heck, it didn't hurt that she got it done in beautiful surroundings, wink,wink!) She emerged triumphant the next day, her mission accomplished. "Why stay in a boring hotel with no character when you can be pampered here?" she exclaimed.
Well, if you were here right now, you would be enjoying a big plate of home made, thick cut french toast with the most delicious seasoned link sausages you've ever tasted and farm fresh cantaloupe garnished with mint from our herb garden, sipping a delicious steaming hot cup of fresh brewed coffee.

Mamie Eisenhower Visits the Fairfield Inn

We were honored to host a lovely luncheon yesterday for a very special group of veterans. The servers donned "I Like Ike" buttons and served delicious raspberry poached pears and savory steak and cheese quiche, while the exuberant, trend-setting First Lady Mamie shared fond memories of her husband through his 38 years in the military, to his presidency and retirement. It was truly an event we will remember for quite some time!

(Living historian Ruthmary McIlhenny portrays Mamie Eisenhower. She has trained and volunteered as a guide at the Eisenhower National Historic site in Gettysburg for 15 years, Her anecdotes about Gettysburg's most famous couple include insights from historical research, oral histories, and personal meetings with members of the Eisenhower family.)
